The Best Hair Colors For Fall, According to Celebrity Stylists

The passing of Labor Day signifies more than just the end of summer. September brings cooler temps, thicker sweaters, and the ceremonial changing of colors. Leaves turn red, moods turn blue, and hair turns an array of warm tones. It can get a tad overwhelming to peruse through overloaded Pinterest boards for the perfect auburn shades, so we asked three celebrity colorists to be our autumnal hair guides.

Ask any stylist and they’ll agree that cold weather usually means hot hues. “Typically, hair colors go a little darker and warmer for the fall and winter months,” says NYC-based colorist Rita Hazan, who’s been responsible for the tresses of every celebrity powerhouse from Madonna to Beyonce. Hazan’s a fan of these darker, deeper tones for fall, but suggests amplifying your current color for a subtle yet impactful transformation. “It’s a gradual change of the seasons and the same can be said for hair color trends. Whatever color you have you’ll want to add dimension and contrast to, but in a very natural and gradual way. You wouldn’t want to go dark to light or vice versa.”

If your aim happens to be a major alteration, George Papanikolas—the Matrix celebrity colorist who counts some of the Kardashian clan among his clients—recommends “dusty” dyes, which double as a way to correct for sun-damaged strands. He favors “soft muted tones like dusty rose gold, dusty mauve, dusty bronze and dusty gold” because “the look is easy to achieve over sun bleached hair.” Hazan also turns to muted palettes for the ultimate trendy autumn accessory. She says, “these warmer tones are better for the fall because they give life to your complexion and work best with fall fashion’s cool color palette.”

For those looking for an irresistible pop of color, Aura Friedman, creative director at famed Sally Hershberger Salon—who just this year blessed Salma Hayek (and by extension us) with pink waves for the Cannes Film Festival—recommends “bright reds, crimson and copper tones, warm blondes, nude platinum blondes, and rich chocolate browns” for their ability to give the illusion of a summer glow months into sweater weather. “Colors are richer and brighter because people lose their tans and yearn for colors that don’t wash them out.”
