Summer may be signing off, but New York barchef Lynnette Marrero says the trend in fresh, natural cocktails is not going away.
“I love being able to offer clients an easy-to-make, high-quality cocktail that will reward them for a hard day’s work or hard workout without leaving them crashing the next day,” she says.
Her secret? Surprisingly, it’s one that’s normally reserved for the spa: Essential oils. Marrero points to the ingredient as having a huge moment in cocktails right now, as customers look to lead more holistic lifestyles.
Spirit brands like Ketel One Vodka are also getting in on the game, playing up the “guilt-free cocktail” movement via farm-fresh ingredients—think cucumber, mint, sage and blueberries—for starters. The brand’s latest move takes a twist on the standard vodka soda through easy-to-follow instructions that have a super aromatic, essential oil–packed twist (if you can remember to pick up two ingredients at the grocery store or farmer’s market, you’re set) and shared the recipe below with us.
While the main step (the booze) hasn’t changed, the company claims the 100-percent non-GMO grain can help “consumers keep it clean while trying to stay lean” by providing a low-cal drink option, minus any artificial sweeteners, syrups and sugary mixers.
Recipe: Ketel Soda With Cucumber & Mint
- 1.5 oz Ketel One Vodka
- 4 oz Club Soda
- Cucumber slices
- Sprig of mint
- Build in a Collins or rocks glass over ice.
- Add 1.5 oz Ketel One Vodka.
- Top with 3 oz club soda.
- Garnish with a cucumber slice and a sprig of mint.
Inside Tip: To make your mint more fragrant, place the leaves or sprig in one hand and gently smack it with the other—this warms up the mint slightly and starts to extract the oils before you use it to garnish your drink.
